I know a few divers who have made their own underwater light cannons or canister lights. Does anybody know how, or where to get some plans??
I've seen one of these home made lights in action and WOW, I've used 400 dollar Dacor's that don't put out that kinda light! Cliffy No offence Colleen... There's nothing wrong with Dacor lights, lol -------------------- Can't hear my wife nag underwater, but her hand signals are getting better!!

Light cannon? Sounds like you'd have to take some weight out of the BC when you're slinging that!
I wonder if LED's are a possibility too - much more efficient and therefore batteries will last longer. |

Here are a couple of links mainly about DIY lights.... http://www.pcmus.com/Dive-Photos/Dive-Light-DIY-SCUBA.htm http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=25647 http://groups.msn.com/Divelight/messages.msnw
LED lights are becoming more popular because of the increase in battery life, but the HID lights give the brightest light with the truest colours. Get ready to spend some $$$ for a HID light. |

Awesome links, Kerplunk thanks. I gotta try that mag light one. I bet you could get some of those crazy new LED's from sonic northern and they would probably work well. I know burn time is a problem on the halogens.
Like I said, I know someone who built one of these and wow! -------------------- Can't hear my wife nag underwater, but her hand signals are getting better!!

I know who built his own light. The light works great. With some access to a lathe the canister is fairly easy,The problem is you still need the light head and cord.I beleive these parts are 400.00 or more .The Halcyon light is 1200.00 or so and the Diverite light goes for about 800.00.You do need some skills to make it and you are risking a fair bit of coin to try it.If you do go for it use good quality plastic for the canister and machine the "o ring"grooves to engineered clearences so the o rings can work properly. Also keep in mind the best way for the water pressure to help seal the cap and hold it in place.
You will also need very good knowledge of electrical wiring for batteries and possibly how to make a battery charger. -------------------- 8-)
